GREEN BAY – When it comes to Xs and Os, there aren’t many parallels to be drawn between Elgton Jenkins and Adrian Amos.

Their positions could not be any more dissimilar with the 6-foot-5, 313-pound Jenkins starring at guard for the Packers, while the 6-foot, 214-pound Amos patrols the backend of Green Bay’s secondary.

However, both typify two of the most valuable traits in today’s NFL – versatility and availability. Jenkins and Amos not only led the team Wholesale Green Bay Packers Jerseys in playing time on their respective side of the ball in 2020, but also did so while juggling multiple positions due to injury.

Jenkins, a second-round pick in 2019, was the Packers’ only offensive lineman to start all 18 games (including playoffs). His versatility was put to the test, as Green Bay leaned on Jenkins to play meaningful snaps at four of the five O-line spots in 2020.

Jenkins made three spots starts at center for an injured Corey Linsley, one at right tackle for a banged-up Billy Turner and finished at left tackle during Green Bay’s Week 9 matchup with San Francisco with David Bakhtiari and Rick Wagner both out.

However, a bulk of his 1,183 offensive snaps came at left guard, where Jenkins became the Packers’ first offensive lineman to earn a Pro Bowl selection during his first two seasons. The only two snaps he missed all season came on a pair of kneel downs at the end of a dominant 35-20 road win over Houston in Week 7.

“It just speaks to what a talented player he is,” said offensive line coach Adam Stenavich in December. “It’s cool that people have taken notice because you see it every day working with the guy and you know what kind of work ethic he has and how special of a player he is, so I think it’s cool when you see that come to fruition and other people take notice of that and vote him into the Pro Bowl.”

Amos led the Packers in defensive snaps played for the second consecutive year. While durability was big factor in Green Bay pursuing the veteran safety as a free agent in 2019, Amos has proven to be one of the defense’s most versatile playmakers.

After hybrid safety Raven Greene was lost for the season due to a shoulder injury in Week 13 against Philadelphia, Amos quickly threw his name in the hat to replace Greene near the line of scrimmage during the Packers’ playoff push.

Amos wound up playing some of his best football in a Packers uniform in that role, recording 36 tackles (28 solo), seven passes defensed, two interceptions and a sack over the final six games of the season (including playoffs).

Amos led the Packers in both tackles (83) and solo tackles (66), while matching or establishing new career-highs in passes defensed (nine), quarterback hits (three) and sacks (two) during his 16 regular-season starts.

“He’s a really smart player,” said Head Coach Matt LaFleur in December. “He has a great understanding of what’s going on. His versatility was really showcased (late in the season), just being able to move inside the box or go back at safety and play his responsibility and play it at a high level.”

Overall, the Packers deployed 71 players on offense and defense en route to a 13-3 regular season that earned Green Bay the top seed in the NFC playoffs for the first time since 2011.

What’s more, the Packers had eight ironmen who played at least 80% of the snaps on their respective side of the ball: Jenkins (1,183), quarterback Aaron Rodgers (1,163), Amos (1,126), guard Lucas Patrick (1,085), guard/tackle Billy Turner (1,030), cornerback Jaire Alexander (1,018), safety Darnell Savage (994) and outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith (950).

With Tyler Ervin headed for IR, the Packers will turn to Tavon Austin.
It’s exciting to think what Tavon Austin can add on special teams for the Green Bay Packers. Also as a gadget player on offense.

We’ll likely see Austin in action sooner rather than later.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, returner Tyler Ervin is “likely headed to IR”. Ervin is dealing with a foot injury, which Pelissero adds is expected to keep him out for at least a month.

Enter Tavon Austin.

Austin can be exactly what the Packers need on special teams. He has plenty of experience returning punts and kickoffs and he has three career return touchdowns to his name.

In his career, Austin has returned 185 punts and 25 kickoffs. He can step right in and help the special teams improve.

In the past seven seasons, Austin has also contributed on offense with 2,006 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns along with 1,340 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

A former first-round pick, it’ll be interesting to see Matt LaFleur’s plan for Austin on offense. We’ve seen him use Ervin creatively since he joined the Packers last December and the same should be expected of Austin.

LaFleur has also worked with Austin in the past while he was offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017. So he understands Austin’s game and will know how he plans to use him on offense.

Austin also played for the Dallas Cowboys between 2018 and ’19.

Austin is an exciting addition for the Packers. While he might not be the number two wide receiver the team has looked for, he can certainly contribute in the backfield and be used creatively. Just as importantly, he can help a return game now without Ervin.

Will we see Austin return a punt for a touchdown in his Packers debut against the Detroit Lions on Sunday?

Two additions made last week suddenly look much more important for the Green Bay Packers.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Packers are expecting to place running back and returner Tyler Ervin and defensive lineman Tyler Ervin on injured reserve. The belief is that Winn will return in three weeks, although the recovery timeline is uncertain for Ervin.

The Packers’ decisions to sign receiver and returner Tavon Austin and claim defensive lineman Anthony Rush off of waivers last week look prudent, and potentially important.

Austin has played all the same roles as Ervin, who suffered his third different injury this season. He hurt his foot against the Philadelphia Eagles and didn’t return. This season, the Packers have used Ervin on returns and as the primary jet motion option on offense, but he’s missed four games with two previous injuries and will now miss at least three more.

Austin was inactive against the Eagles but could play a role both on both offense and special teams on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Rush, a gigantic human being at 6-4 and 361 pounds, may need to play snaps as a rotational defensive lineman with Winn out for at least three games.

Winn, who was on the field for 41 snaps on defense over six games this season, injured his triceps against the Eagles. His batted pass created an interception for Christian Kirksey against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Packers are getting thin along the defensive line with Winn and Montravius Adams both on injured reserve.

If Ervin and Winn are placed on injured reserve, the Packers will have 10 total players on injured reserve.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – An old portrait posted on eBay featured a man with a striking resemblance to Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.

The photo of the unidentified mustached man sold for $202.50.

The seller, who is located in Iowa, listed the photo as “Antique Victorian Photograph Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Look alike with Wife.”

The eBay description says the photo is from “late 1800′s early 1900′s.” The seller auctions off vintage items.

GREEN BAY – Aaron Rodgers long ago put another Super Bowl far higher on his priority list than any additional individual accolades.

But don’t think he’s not keenly aware of his current status as one of two top candidates in 2020 for what would be his third NFL Most Valuable Player award.

“It’s nice to be back in the conversation,” Rodgers said Wednesday.

Rodgers’ first two MVPs were never really in doubt. In 2011, he received 48 of the 50 Associated Press votes, and in ’14, he got 31 of 50.

The Packers QB also thought he had a shot in 2012, when Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson won it by making a convincing statement in the season’s last game, rushing for 199 yards against Green Bay to get the Vikings into the playoffs and himself over 2,000 yards.

And then in 2016, Rodgers’ late-season run “didn’t really get a sniff,” he said, though technically he did receive two votes to winner and Atlanta QB Matt Ryan’s 25.

This year, with three regular-season games remaining, it’s shaping up to be a close vote between Rodgers and Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 MVP.

The Chiefs have one loss to the Packers’ three, with Mahomes leading the league in passing yards (4,208, 500-plus ahead of Rodgers). Meanwhile Rodgers has the edge in TD passes (36-33), interceptions (4-5) and passer rating (119.7-112.3).

Throughout the season, Rodgers has discussed the long list of reasons for his higher level of play compared to a year ago, when his 95.4 passer rating was not among his best statistical seasons.

A second year in Head Coach Matt LaFleur’s system, extensive offseason (virtual) meetings about the playbook, physical work on his legs, and studying his fundamentals on old film all have contributed.

On Wednesday, he indicated a particular throw in training camp on a deep stop route by Marquez Valdes-Scantling, on which he executed a fake and “threw a laser,” was the moment he felt everything clicking in, and he’s been rolling since then.

By Week 3, after the Packers had scored 43, 42 and 37 points in three victories, a lot of talk surrounded how the now 37-year-old Rodgers had suddenly turned back the clock. His favorite receiver, Davante Adams, saw it differently, though.

Adams felt between the disappointment in losing the NFC title game last year and the fact that he didn’t put up typical Rodgers numbers in an otherwise wildly successful year, he expected this type of response.

“Everybody was trying to say he’s back to being the old A-Rod,” Adams said. “I see that old A-Rod, whoever that is, daily. I knew it was coming.

“Knowing what type of competitor he is, I guess I knew far ahead of time.”

In a year already full of milestones, Rodgers and Adams are on the verge of yet another one, together. With 91 receptions this season, Adams has now caught 474 career passes from Rodgers, moving past the 469 Jordy Nelson caught from him.

The only more productive duo in Packers history in terms of completions is Brett Favre and Donald Driver, with 486. Adams already has four double-digit reception games this season, so it’s not out of the question he and Rodgers will move past Favre and Driver as soon as Saturday night against Carolina.

“He’s dynamic in any offense,” Rodgers said of Adams. “He’s one of those transcendent players. He can play in any system because he can legitimately run any route and he has the knowledge to be able to set every route up.”

Adams wasn’t around for Rodgers’ first MVP and was the team’s No. 3 receiver as a rookie when he won his second. With the MVP talk swirling around Rodgers again, it’s worth pondering whether Adams – with 1,144 receiving yards and a league-leading 14 TDs in just 11 games played – will garner attention for the AP’s Offensive Player of the Year award.

He could also become the Packers’ first receiver to earn AP first-team All-Pro honors since Antonio Freeman in 1998 (Nelson was second team in 2014).

The most historic achievement, though, would be a third MVP for Rodgers. Only five players have accomplished that in the annals of the AP award, which date back to 1957 – Peyton Manning (5) tops the list, followed by Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Johnny Unitas and Jim Brown (3 apiece).

“There’s not many guys that have won three,” Rodgers said. “So that would definitely mean a lot.”
